At about 5 kilometres West from the Salt marsh flows the Chidro river. This is the main water flow of the entire Apulian Ionian Coast. Ancient charters describe it as a fishing place and a source of water availability for many different purposes. According to Manduria citizens this is the legendary river believed to have risen from the tears spilt by Saint Peters to expiate the sense of guilt for having denied Christ. According to the legend, Saint Peters with his tears cured Fellone, King of Felline (an ancient lineage) of leprosy. The spontaneous vegetation is the typical one of freshwater rivers and luxuriant along the whole course.
