Located in the middle of the eastern side of the province of Taranto, Fragagnano rises in the area known as the “Murgia Tarantina” (the “ Murge” southern extension), a hill complex that starts in the central area of the Ionian province and finishes in Salento at the border between the province of Lecce and the “City of the two seas”(Taranto). Fragagnano is the fourth highest town (123 m..a.s.l.) in the “Murge Tarantine” after Roccaforzata (145 m.a.s.l.) and the contiguous municipalities of Monteparano( 135 m.a.s.l.) and San marzano di San Giuseppe (134 m.a.s.l.). The territory features many typical elements of the Mediterrenean maquis.

Most of the Fragagnano countryside is cultivated land, especially with vines (typical of the area are the “Primitivo” and “Black Malvasia” vines) and olive trees from which a great olive oil is obtained. The landed properties are generally divided into small lots separated by typical dry stone walls.

Stones have always been used to create many different dry stone buildings (pagghiare) where peasants used to take a rest or store their working tools. These constructions are much more similar to the small Sardinian nuraghe than to the Apulian trulli. On the other hand, spontaneous vegetation features many typical elements (distinctive of the Mediterranean maquis) among which stands out the prickly pear. It was chosen around 3000 BC by prehistoric men of the Stone Age as an area where to place circular huts. This is witnessed by the finds discovered during the excavations on Saint Sophia mount which is, at present, part of the town centre.

Previous excavations carried out in the Cazzato district, a few kilometres far from the town, have also brought to life other pottery fragments of the same Age.
