The history of this town started around the XI century when a group of peasants and farmers left the coast (Torre Ovo area, where now rises an archaeological site) and moved to the hinterland to be safe from Saracen pirates attacks. Evidence of that period is the evocative Holy Trinity Church Crypt which dates back to the XII century. Nowadays the town rises around an imposing five tower castle made of tuff stones built in the Aragon’s Age in the second half of the XV century. It is, without doubt, one of the most interesting and best preserved castles of its kind in the area.
In 1407 Torricella was owned by the Capitignano family and after by the Santoro, Montagnese and Muscettola families. After the abolition of the feudal rights it was part of Sava first and thn of Lizzano.
It only gained its autonomy on July 31st, 1954. After Statte, Torricella is therefore the youngest town of the Province of Taranto.
