Erchie, with its Neolithic finds, might have been a religious centre and a place of worship of demigod Hercules from which the town took the name of Hercolanum (or Heracle). After the Roman Conquest, Erchie lost its importance because of the proximity of Mandurium (Manduria) and most of all Tarentum (Taranto). In the I century AD it took the name of Hercle. Around the X century some Basilian monks built a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Lucia on an ancient Messapian place of worship located on a cave.
The Basilian monks also introduced the cult of Saint Irene, today’s patron saint of the town. Between the XIII and the XIV century its population continued to decrease: in 1377 there were about twenty inhabitants, therefore Erchie was more of a hamlet than a built-up area. In the meantime the place-name changed from Hercle to Herchie. The repopulation of the village started in the XVI century with the arrival of Albanian people who were escaping from the Turkish, but only after the XVII century the number of inhabitants increased remarkably.
It used to be property of the Montefuscoli family who rebuilt the town centre after Saracen raids, then it became property of the Mairo family, after that of the Bonifacio, of the Albrizzi and of the Laviano family thanks to whom, in the XVIII century, the Doge’s Palace was built. In 1754 the whole population included a bit less than 1000 inhabitants of which 233 were foreigners. Today’s population is about 9 thousand.
