The town of Lizzano is situated in a mostly level land. Its elevation ranges from a minimum of 0 m. a.s.l. near the seaside and the coast to a maximum of 97 m.a.s.l. near the hill area. The town hall is located at 42 m.a.s.l.; Lizzano’s seaside is 5 km away from the town centre.

The coast is characterized by fine white sandy beaches and dunes with rich Mediterranean vegetation. The agricultural landscape is characterized by olive trees, many different arboreal crops, fig orchards and almond groves alternating with vineyards and arable lands. The spontaneous vegetation and the Mediterranean maquis can be found in higher and rocky areas as well as in dune areas. The countryside features many Neolithic evidences, dry stone walls, and “specchie”(megaliths). There are about 35 manor farms located around the whole territory and also the typical “trulli” of Salento, considered to be monuments of peasants’ civilization. The trullo ( of Salento, also known as truddi, pagghiare, furnieddi or casedde) is a construction made of stones removed from rocky soil to make it workable.

These constructions were used as a shelter for people and animals or to store working tools. In the municipality’s territory there is a torrential water flow known as Ostone River or Cupi Canal ( in local dialect: lu Stoni or li cupi). The river and the surrounding area are very interesting for the flora and fauna as well as the historic point of view. Along the river course many animal species like amphibians (frogs, toads, etc.), fishes (especially eels) and many birds have found their natural habitat. Here the vegetation is also very rich.

Along the entire river course there is a thick groove of reeds and many other plant species. The river is also very important from the historic point of view because along its course, especially near the seaside, copious amounts of archaeological finds (crockery, gold, pottery, carved stones, small votive temples, and necropolis) of the Bronze Age, Great Greek Age and an entire Neolithc village have been discovered. Later with the drainages carried out at the end of 1800, the Ostone River was used to drain the Rotonda Marsh in the San Cinieri area.
